Dictionary text

The idioms, related-word information, definitions, and published examples are based on the Standard Korean Language Dictionary from the National Institute of Korean Language. Dictionary text without a separate notice may be used under CC BY-SA 2.0 KR.

When you reuse it, credit the National Institute of Korean Language and the Standard Korean Language Dictionary, and include the original entry address and the license. If you distribute a modified version, say what changed and keep the same license. Each idiom page shows its dictionary entry ID and a link to the original entry.

Some definitions have been expanded so a referenced meaning can be read in the same sentence. That expansion is an editorial aid, not an official statement by the National Institute of Korean Language. “View original Korean definition” shows the original wording and the referenced entry. The website and the videos use the same Korean definitions.

We have withheld 1,196 examples that cite an external source, such as a literary work, newspaper, or magazine, until their reuse terms are confirmed. The site currently publishes 3,144 examples. An entry with withheld examples says how many are not shown.

Illustrations made for this site

The 3,479 illustrations were made with AI for this site. Each one shows the first listed meaning of an idiom. The original pictures do not include a title or explanatory text. When an idiom has several meanings, the picture still follows the first. Idioms that share a picture do not all mean the same thing.

You may copy, share, adapt, redistribute, and use these WORDROW illustrations commercially if you credit “WORDROW Korean Idioms” and the idiom page where the picture appears. Link to that page online, and print a readable address on paper. Keep the credit when you crop or edit the picture.

Workbooks and share cards

Handwriting PDFs and share cards combine dictionary text with an illustration. The text, the examples, and the picture each keep their own terms. Being able to download a file does not by itself allow every part of it to be redistributed.

Permission to use an illustration does not replace the rights in dictionary text, sourced quotations, or fonts. The dictionary license does not cover the site logo, code, or design as a whole.

English translation

The English renderings, literal translations, definitions, and translations of published examples for all 3,886 idioms were prepared with machine assistance. They have not been professionally reviewed. Read them alongside the Korean definitions.
